A cosy nest in the dunes
On a sloping site situated on the corner of a plot on the Belgian coast, Van Damme-Vandeputte Architects has designed ‘The Lodge’: a holiday home that combines security and privacy with a strong connection to the surrounding dune landscape. The architecture strikes a balance between protection and openness, thanks to warm materials, natural colors and sweeping views of the North Sea.
Materiality plays a central role in the design. The dark wooden façades contrast with a solid, sand-colored compacted concrete plinth. Inside, this same focus on natural materials and tactility continues. Wood, ceramics and subtle finishes set the tone, with soft sandy tones and touches of olive green that blend harmoniously with the coastal landscape.
Stoopen & Meeus’ mineral finishes also form part of this range of materials. The walls and ceilings have been coated with Crustal, whilst Stucresin has been applied to certain sections of the floor. Both finishes form part of the interior’s layered materiality, where texture and subtle color nuances play an important role.
The result is a warm and understated holiday home, where the architecture, materials and surroundings are closely intertwined.
